Monday March 23, 2009

Let me preface these journal entries by saying that most of this trip was planned spontaneously. Since March is the off-season for Greece ferry schedules are sketchy, a lot of tours aren’t running, and the weather is unpredictable (making things cheaper too!) so we decided to book our plane ticket and plan the rest as we went along. It turned out to be the best way we could have done it.

We woke up and had breakfast in our hostel….English style with eggs, bacon, toast, coffee, and juice. We wanted to fuel up because we signed up for an inexpensive walking tour of Athens through our hostel that lasted for most of the day. At 9:30 we were guided to another hostel to meet our tour guide, Walter, and three other touring students. Walter is originally from North Carolina but now lives in Greece with his wife. He was very knowledgeable and easy to understand!

At the end of the tour Walter offered to take us to his favorite restaurant in the Plaka, an area of Athens in the shadow of the Acropolis, and of course we took him up on the offer. The restaurant’s specialty, and Walter’s recommendation, was the kebab so that’s what I ordered. I’m still a little unsure of the official similarities between a gyro and a kebab but from what I can tell a kebab is an open faced pita with some kind of meat with similar flavors to what I consider gyro meat, but more sausage like, topped with onions, tomatoes, and the restaurant’s homemade tzatziki. YUM!

After our late lunch we shopped through the flea market which was really more like a narrow street of tourist’s shops. When stores started to close we headed back to our hostel grabbing some snack foods at a grocery store to tide us over through the evening and for our long ferry ride the next day.
